Violent and property crime rates in the U.S. dropped to two-decade lows in 2024, according to new FBI data, contradicting President Trump’s campaign claims that crime had surged under Biden.
The FBI reported a violent crime rate of 359.1 per 100,000 residents last year — the lowest since at least 2014. Property crime dropped to 1,760.1 per 100,000 residents, also a 20-year low. Notably, murders fell 14.9% and auto thefts plummeted 18.6%.
The declines follow early-pandemic surges and come despite lower police staffing levels. Experts credit community investments under the American Rescue Plan and Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
Yet the Justice Department in April canceled $820 million in crime prevention grants. Analysts are watching to see whether the loss of those funds affects future crime rates.
Trump has continued to falsely link immigration to rising crime, even as data shows the opposite trend.
