Democrats are mocking President-elect Donald Trump by suggesting billionaire Elon Musk holds more sway over key decisions than Trump himself. Musk, a close ally and co-chair of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), played a pivotal role in derailing a bipartisan spending deal, prompting some to dub him “President Musk.”
Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.) accused Musk of pressuring Trump to oppose the agreement, fueling speculation about a potential rift between the two influential figures. Former Democratic leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and others have highlighted Musk’s influence on Republican lawmakers through social media.
Musk’s role in Trump’s administration has expanded, with involvement in funding debates and policy meetings. Democrats argue that Musk’s outsized influence as an unelected figure is alarming, while GOP strategist Doug Heye dismissed the “President Musk” label as ineffective trolling.
The dynamic between Trump and Musk has prompted questions about how long their alliance will last, with critics speculating Musk’s growing prominence may eventually clash with Trump’s demand for loyalty.
