The arrest of Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan on Friday triggered a fierce partisan divide in Washington, with Democratic lawmakers calling it an abuse of power and Republicans defending the action as lawful accountability.

Dugan was arrested at the Milwaukee County Courthouse and charged with obstruction and concealing an individual after allegedly helping undocumented defendant Eduardo Flores Ruiz evade ICE agents. FBI Director Kash Patel accused the judge of intentionally misdirecting agents — a claim shared in a now-deleted post on X.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) called the move “a whole new descent into government chaos,” while Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wisc.) said it resembled tactics seen in authoritarian regimes. Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio) added, “They arrested a judge?! … Unbelievable.”

Meanwhile, Republicans like Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wisc.) said activist judges must be held accountable. Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) simply responded: “Lock em up!!”

Democrats are calling for a formal investigation into the arrest, warning it could set a dangerous precedent for judicial independence.
