Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is considered a potential contender against former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential race. However, recent events suggest that he might face significant obstacles in mounting a serious challenge to Trump’s grip on the Republican Party.

While DeSantis has a financial advantage through his political committee, Friends of Ron DeSantis, he is losing ground to Trump in the polls. A recent Morning Consult poll showed Trump leading DeSantis by 41 points among potential Republican primary voters. Furthermore, donors are expressing concerns about DeSantis’s prospects; for example, Bloomberg reports after a meeting with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Steve Schwarzman has decided to hold off on giving him money. Schwarzman, the CEO of Blackstone, is a major donor who is increasingly concerned about DeSantis’s prospects as a potential presidential candidate.

Despite DeSantis’s strong political profile as Florida’s governor, his ability to rally enough support for a serious presidential challenge remains uncertain. DeSantis and Trump are competing for the same conservative voter base, with DeSantis positioning himself as a strong conservative on immigration, education, and gender identity. Trump has singled out DeSantis as his main rival. If he can prevent DeSantis from gaining momentum, he may eliminate all other challengers to his candidacy.

Ultimately, the success of DeSantis’s potential presidential bid depends on his ability to differentiate himself from Trump while maintaining his conservative support base.
