President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, following felony convictions for tax and gun crimes, sparked strong criticism from Democratic and Republican officials alike. Biden defended the pardon, arguing his son was unfairly targeted for political reasons and asserting that the move was an act of justice.

Several Democrats criticized the decision as a misuse of presidential power. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) stated, “A president’s family and allies shouldn’t get special treatment,” while Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) warned the pardon could tarnish Biden’s reputation and set a troubling precedent. Progressive lawmakers like Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) urged Biden to focus on pardoning nonviolent offenders instead.

Some officials, such as Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), defended the move as constitutionally valid and compassionate, noting Hunter Biden’s struggles and alleged political exploitation.

Republicans also condemned Biden for breaking prior pledges not to pardon his son. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) criticized the reversal, saying, “Don’t lie to us. Don’t tell us you’re not going to do it and then do it.”

Hunter Biden’s legal troubles stemmed from allegations of selective prosecution, which Biden said aimed to harm his presidency. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and First Lady Jill Biden stood by the president, calling the pardon a necessary action against perceived injustice.
