Nineteen Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration, challenging Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to Treasury Department records containing personal financial data of millions of Americans.

Filed in federal court in New York City, the lawsuit alleges the administration violated federal law by granting DOGE access to the Treasury’s payment system, which processes tax refunds, Social Security, and veterans’ benefits. Critics fear DOGE, created to cut government spending, could freeze or block federal payments.

New York Attorney General Letitia James warned that Musk’s unelected group is unauthorized to handle such data and could illegally halt essential payments. The suit argues that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent improperly changed policies to allow access, violating federal law and constitutional separation of powers.

Meanwhile, labor unions and lawmakers are pushing for a Treasury investigation, and a judge has temporarily limited DOGE’s access.
