The United States and Britain conducted a coordinated military operation against 36 Houthi targets across Yemen on Saturday, escalating their response to the Iran-backed group’s attacks on American and international interests. This operation, involving warships and fighter jets, targeted the Houthis in 13 different locations, utilizing U.S. F/A-18 fighter jets from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and Tomahawk missiles from Navy destroyers in the Red Sea. This action follows an earlier assault targeting Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, in retaliation for a drone strike killing three U.S. troops in Jordan.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the strikes, supported by multiple allies, as a clear message to the Houthis to cease their attacks on international shipping and naval vessels. The targeted sites included weapons storage, missile systems, launchers, air defense systems, and radars. This operation marks the third major U.S.-British joint effort against Houthi capabilities in Yemen, underscoring a broader stance against Iran’s support for militant groups across the Middle East.

The Houthi attacks have significantly impacted commercial shipping routes, prompting reroutes around Africa, increasing costs and journey times. The U.S. and allies have responded by establishing a protective naval mission for ships traversing critical waterways. Meanwhile, Iran has sought to distance itself from the actions of the militias it supports, amid regional tensions and retaliatory cycles involving U.S. forces and Iranian-backed groups.
