ST. PAUL, Minnesota — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said state officials may pursue further action against former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following her departure from the Trump administration.
Walz raised the possibility of an investigation related to federal immigration enforcement operations carried out in Minneapolis earlier this year.
Two Americans were shot and killed during the January operations, prompting criticism from Minnesota officials. Walz said the state is seeking accountability rather than retaliation.
“We’re not looking for retribution; we’re looking for justice and we’re looking to make sure that no one’s above the law,” Walz said in an interview.
Walz also called on senators to delay confirmation of Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), whom President Donald Trump nominated to replace Noem as secretary of Homeland Security, until Minnesota authorities are allowed to participate in the federal investigation into the deaths.
State officials said investigators from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were excluded from joint probes with the FBI.
Democratic governors in other states also criticized Noem’s tenure following the announcement of her departure.
