Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and Gen. David Hodne, moves that reportedly caught military leaders off guard. The firings come as U.S. forces remain engaged in operations tied to the Iran conflict and ongoing deployments in the Middle East.
According to multiple U.S. officials cited in reporting, the decision was driven more by internal disagreements and personality conflicts than strategic differences. One official described the timing bluntly, calling the move “insane” given the operational demands currently facing the military.
