Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump is proposing a historic increase in military spending while calling for reductions in domestic programs as part of his 2027 budget outline.
The plan requests $1.5 trillion for defense, marking one of the largest proposed military budgets in decades. The proposal reflects the administration’s continued focus on national security, particularly following the ongoing conflict involving Iran and broader global threats.
At the same time, the White House is seeking a 10% reduction in nondefense spending, with some responsibilities shifted to state and local governments. Trump has argued that federal resources should prioritize defense needs over domestic programs such as childcare and healthcare.
The budget outline, prepared by White House officials, is intended as a framework for Congress, which ultimately controls federal spending decisions. Lawmakers often revise or reject presidential proposals during the appropriations process.
The proposal comes as federal deficits approach $2 trillion annually and the national debt exceeds $39 trillion. Mandatory spending programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, continue to account for a large share of federal expenditures.
