Milwaukee, Wisconsin — Federal immigration authorities have arrested a prominent Islamic community leader, prompting conflicting claims from officials and attorneys over the nature of the case.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, under the Department of Homeland Security, announced the arrest of Salah Sarsour, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, on allegations of immigration fraud and suspected ties to terrorist financing.
According to DHS, Sarsour allegedly lied on immigration forms when entering the United States in the 1990s and had prior legal issues in Israel, including a conviction related to throwing a Molotov cocktail and attempting to possess weapons. Officials said those omissions allowed him to later obtain legal permanent resident status.
DHS representatives described the arrest as part of broader enforcement efforts, stating the case involves national security concerns. Sarsour is currently being held in an Indiana jail pending further proceedings.
However, Sarsour’s attorneys strongly dispute the allegations, arguing the arrest is politically motivated and tied to his outspoken support for Palestinian causes. They maintain that U.S. authorities were aware of his past decades ago and that he has no criminal record in the United States.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson also criticized the arrest, calling it an “outrage” and stating there is no substantive evidence of wrongdoing.
