Tallahassee, Florida — Alexander Vindman formally launched a Democratic campaign for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, reentering the national spotlight years after serving as a key whistleblower during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment.

In a campaign launch video, Vindman referenced his 2019 congressional testimony, saying he swore an oath “to tell the truth about a president who broke his.” Vindman, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, framed his candidacy around fighting corruption and rising costs, citing his family’s history as refugees who fled authoritarianism.

Vindman is seeking to unseat Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), who was appointed to fill the remainder of former Sen. Marco Rubio’s term after Rubio joined the Trump administration’s Cabinet. The race is widely expected to be competitive, though Republicans have held the seat comfortably in recent cycles. Rubio won reelection by double digits in 2022.

Vindman rose to prominence after reporting concerns about a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which Democrats argued showed improper pressure to investigate then-candidate Joe Biden. Trump was impeached by the House but acquitted by the Senate and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, calling the call “perfect.”

After testifying, Vindman was removed from his National Security Council role and later retired from the Army, saying political retaliation ended his military career. His brother, Eugene Vindman, later won a congressional seat in Virginia.

Vindman will face a contested Democratic primary that includes Jennifer Jenkins, Hector Mujica, and state Rep. Angie Nixon ahead of the August 18 primary election.
