ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Democratic leaders and the family of slain former House Speaker Melissa Hortman are condemning President Donald Trump for amplifying false and unsubstantiated claims about her murder, warning that such rhetoric risks fueling further political violence.
On Saturday, Trump shared a Truth Social post and video promoting conspiracy theories that falsely tied Hortman’s June 14 killing to Gov. Tim Walz and alleged fraud in state programs. Authorities have said there is no evidence supporting those claims. Hortman, her husband Mark, and their dog were killed in what officials described as a politically motivated attack.
Walz, a close friend and longtime political ally of Hortman, called the president’s actions “dangerous, depraved behavior,” saying the spread of false narratives could lead to additional harm. Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy and House DFL Leader Zack Stephenson also denounced the post, urging Republicans to reject misinformation surrounding the case.
Prosecutors say the suspect, Vance Boelter, compiled a target list that included Democratic officials and abortion rights supporters. While Boelter allegedly wrote a letter claiming Walz was involved, federal officials described the document as delusional and riddled with falsehoods. Boelter has pleaded not guilty and told reporters his actions were linked to conspiracy beliefs about COVID-19 vaccines.
Hortman’s children, Colin and Sophie, publicly asked Trump to remove the post, saying it compounded their grief and dishonored their mother’s memory. The White House has not responded to requests for comment.
