Austin, Texas – Democratic leaders in Texas and nationally are condemning congressional candidate Maureen Galindo after she proposed turning an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility into a “prison for American Zionists.”

Galindo, who is running in the Democratic primary runoff for Texas’s 35th Congressional District, made the remarks in a social media post last week. She also suggested criminal penalties against Zionists and made inflammatory comments linking Zionism to antisemitism and pedophilia.

The statements quickly sparked backlash from prominent Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who called the remarks “absolutely disgusting” and endorsed Galindo’s primary opponent, Johnny Garcia. Texas state Sen. nominee James Talarico and Rep. Christian Menefee also publicly rejected Galindo’s candidacy, arguing antisemitism has no place in the Democratic Party.

Galindo has also promoted conspiracy theories involving billionaire Zionist donors and has faced scrutiny over campaign funding connected to a political action committee reportedly tied to Republican fundraising networks.

The controversy comes as tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict continue fueling sharp divisions inside both major political parties. Democratic leaders have increasingly faced pressure to condemn antisemitic rhetoric while also navigating criticism from progressive activists over U.S. policy toward Israel.

Galindo and Garcia are scheduled to face each other in a Democratic runoff election on May 26.
