Sacramento, California – California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced an investigation into whether TikTok is violating state law by allegedly suppressing content critical of President Donald Trump following the platform’s recent transfer to U.S.-based ownership. The governor’s office said it had received reports and confirmed instances in which users appeared unable to search or share terms such as “Epstein,” as well as posts criticizing Trump or federal immigration enforcement actions.

TikTok has denied engaging in censorship, attributing the reported issues to technical problems linked to power outages and early glitches after restructuring its U.S. operations. The company told NPR and Reuters it has no policy banning the term “Epstein” and said it is investigating the technical issues.

The investigation comes shortly after TikTok finalized a $14 billion deal placing U.S. operations under a joint venture led by domestic, Trump-aligned investors. State officials have not presented evidence that any content suppression was intentional, and TikTok maintains that algorithm changes and outages, not political bias, explain the disruptions.
