CHICAGO, Ill. — A federal lawsuit filed by life insurance company Nippon alleges that OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot helped convince an Illinois woman to fire her attorney and attempt to reopen a previously settled legal case.
According to the lawsuit, Graciela Dela Torre had reached a settlement with Nippon in a long-term disability dispute two years ago. The agreement included a full legal release and the case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it could not be filed again.
Nippon claims that after her attorney told her the settlement could not be undone, Dela Torre turned to ChatGPT for help. The chatbot allegedly assisted her in drafting legal filings seeking to reopen the case, which she submitted without legal representation. A judge later denied the attempt.
Following that decision, Dela Torre filed a new lawsuit and submitted dozens of court filings that Nippon says were generated with the help of ChatGPT. The insurance company claims responding to the filings cost nearly $300,000 in legal expenses.
Legal experts say the situation highlights growing questions about artificial intelligence tools being used in legal disputes. One technology executive described the case as potentially “groundbreaking,” noting it could raise broader questions about how courts handle AI-assisted legal filings.
