MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A large-scale Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in south Minneapolis turned deadly Wednesday after a federal agent shot and killed a woman, sparking protests, confrontations with law enforcement, and an immediate federal investigation.

According to reporting from The Guardian, unmarked ICE vehicles were conducting enforcement activity as part of what the agency has described as its largest operation to date, a planned 30-day surge across the region. Following the shooting, yellow police tape sealed off the area while crowds of residents, activists, and trained immigration observers gathered, shouting at ICE agents and local police. Protesters repeatedly demanded the arrest of the agent involved and called for ICE to leave the city.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey arrived at the scene and later held a press conference sharply criticizing the federal operation. Frey told reporters that ICE’s presence was escalating danger rather than improving safety and accused the agency of terrorizing long-standing immigrant families. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara and several city council members also responded as local police eventually took control of the scene and ICE agents departed.

As ICE vehicles exited the area, some bystanders threw snowballs, prompting agents to deploy chemical irritants and less-lethal pellets. Volunteer medics later treated several people for exposure. The victim, identified by O’Hara as a 37-year-old white woman, has not been publicly named.

The shooting is now under joint investigation by the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to determine whether state or federal laws were violated.
