A former Massachusetts police officer accused of murdering a young woman he allegedly groomed as a minor now faces an additional charge for causing the death of her unborn child. Federal prosecutors said Matthew Farwell, 39, of Easton, strangled 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore in early 2021 after she told him she was pregnant and claimed he was the father.

Farwell, who served with the Stoughton Police Department from 2012 to 2022, was previously indicted in August 2024 on charges of sexual exploitation and murder. According to court documents, he began grooming Birchmore when she joined the police explorers program at age 12 and began sexually abusing her at 15. Prosecutors allege that Farwell continued to exploit her as an adult and even met with her for sex while on duty.

After Birchmore’s death, investigators say Farwell used his law enforcement training to stage her apartment to appear as a suicide. Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara called the case “a horrific injustice” and said her department worked closely with the FBI to ensure accountability.

Farwell remains in federal custody and is scheduled for trial next year. His defense attorneys have not commented.
