Portsmouth, Virginia — Federal agents executed court-authorized search warrants Wednesday at multiple Portsmouth properties connected to Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas as part of an ongoing federal investigation, according to the FBI.
In a statement, the FBI confirmed agents were conducting “court-authorized law enforcement activity” tied to an active investigation and said there was no danger to the public. Television footage from local media outlets showed numerous federal law enforcement vehicles and agents outside locations reportedly associated with Lucas and a nearby cannabis dispensary.
Fox News reporters at the scene said multiple individuals appeared to have been taken into custody, though federal officials had not publicly confirmed arrests or announced any criminal charges as of Wednesday afternoon. Authorities also have not disclosed the nature of the investigation.
Lucas, a longtime Democratic state senator and one of Virginia’s most influential lawmakers, had not publicly commented on the searches before publication. The Center Square reported it was unable to obtain statements from Lucas or the FBI Richmond Field Office prior to release.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott defended Lucas while emphasizing the importance of due process. Scott also referenced President Donald Trump’s ongoing criticism of political opponents and the Justice Department, suggesting the investigation may face heightened political scrutiny.
The investigation remains ongoing, and federal authorities have not released additional details regarding the warrants or possible allegations connected to the case.
