New York City, New York — A federal judge on Wednesday unsealed a purported suicide note linked to Jeffrey Epstein, releasing the document publicly for the first time after years of legal secrecy surrounding the disgraced financier’s death in federal custody.
U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas ordered the note released after a petition from The New York Times, while federal prosecutors acknowledged there was significant public interest in the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s 2019 death. Prosecutors said the Justice Department does not know whether the document is authentic and had never previously reviewed it before the court filing.
The handwritten note allegedly surfaced through Nicholas Tartaglione, Epstein’s former jail cellmate who is currently serving four life sentences for murder. Court filings state Tartaglione claimed he discovered the document hidden inside a graphic novel after Epstein’s July 2019 suicide attempt.
The undated and unsigned note reportedly includes statements such as “They investigated me for months- FOUND NOTHING!!!” and references about choosing the timing of one’s death. Some language reportedly resembles phrases Epstein used in prior communications.
Questions remain about whether Epstein actually wrote the note, and neither federal investigators nor independent handwriting experts have publicly verified its authenticity. The unusual path through which the document emerged has renewed scrutiny over gaps in the investigation surrounding Epstein’s death while in federal custody.
