Washington, D.C. — The Trump administration unveiled a new national counterterrorism strategy Wednesday that places increased focus on what officials describe as left-wing “violent secular” groups accused of carrying out politically motivated violence and assassination attempts in recent years.

Sebastian Gorka, senior counterterrorism director at the National Security Council and one of the architects of the plan, said the strategy will prioritize identifying and disrupting organizations with ideologies officials described as “anti-American, radically pro-gender or anarchist.” Gorka argued during a press briefing that left-wing extremist violence has recently surpassed violence linked to far-right groups.

President Donald Trump previously signed an executive order designating the far-left activist movement antifa as a terrorist organization. Gorka said federal agencies would use “all constitutionally available tools” to identify networks connected to politically motivated violence while coordinating with law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The administration’s strategy also expands efforts targeting international terrorist organizations, including ISIS-K and al Qaeda, while continuing aggressive operations against drug cartels in Central and South America. Officials said the administration has carried out dozens of lethal military strikes against suspected cartel-linked “narco-terrorists” since September 2025.

A 2025 analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that left-wing extremist attacks outnumbered far-right attacks for the first time in decades, though researchers warned that far-right violence remains a continuing threat requiring government attention.
