WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI — Federal authorities have formally classified the March 12 attack on a Michigan synagogue as terrorism, citing links to Hezbollah and a targeted threat against the Jewish community.
Investigators say Ayman Ghazali drove an explosive-laden truck into Temple Israel, the state’s largest synagogue, while armed with a rifle. He later died after exchanging gunfire with security personnel. Officials stated the attack followed an Israeli airstrike that killed members of Ghazali’s family in Lebanon, some of whom were reportedly tied to Hezbollah.
According to federal prosecutors, Ghazali’s actions constituted “material support” for Hezbollah under U.S. law. Evidence recovered from his phone showed months of planning, including research into synagogues, consumption of pro-Hezbollah propaganda, and recordings describing his intent to carry out violence. Authorities also said he purchased weapons and fireworks days before the attack.
Despite the scale of the attack, no children or staff inside the synagogue’s early childhood center were injured. A security guard was hospitalized, and first responders were treated for smoke inhalation. Officials credited the building’s sprinkler system with limiting further damage.
With Passover beginning April 1, law enforcement agencies are increasing security at synagogues and Jewish community sites nationwide.
