Raleigh, North Carolina. — A North Carolina Green Party candidate was forcibly removed from a Senate hearing after interrupting proceedings with an anti-war protest.
Brian McGinnis, a former Marine running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), disrupted a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing while protesting U.S. military aid to Israel.
McGinnis, wearing his military uniform, shouted criticism of U.S. foreign policy before Capitol Police and Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) intervened and attempted to remove him from the hearing room. Video from the incident shows McGinnis resisting as officers escorted him out.
Capitol Police said the confrontation left three officers and McGinnis with injuries. Authorities charged him with three counts of assaulting a police officer along with three additional counts related to resisting arrest.
McGinnis later said the incident strengthened his resolve to continue his Senate campaign, writing that the experience made him “only more determined.”
