Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and 17 other Democratic governors have called on U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon to release nearly $6.8 billion in delayed education funding, accusing the Department of Education of creating “unnecessary chaos” by pausing payments to federally funded programs. The delay affects Kansas schools to the tune of $43 million, particularly impacting rural districts relying on professional development, student support, and literacy initiatives.

Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson said school districts were caught off guard when they were informed on June 30 that funding would not be distributed. Programs affected include those for English language learners, migrant education, and before- and after-school initiatives.

Kelly, chair of the Democratic Governors Association, stated that the Trump administration’s delay harms both students and teachers, particularly in rural areas. Earlier this year, more than $22 million in education funds were frozen and later released, raising further concerns over fiscal stability in state education systems.
