Denver, Colorado — Rep. Lauren Boebert publicly criticized President Donald Trump on Tuesday after he vetoed bipartisan legislation intended to complete a long-delayed water infrastructure project serving southeastern Colorado, raising rare intraparty tensions early in his second term.

Boebert said the veto blocked clean drinking water access for roughly 50,000 residents and questioned the president’s motives, noting the bill passed both chambers of Congress unanimously. In a statement shared on social media and to local media, Boebert called the measure “non-controversial” and warned that denying water to rural communities contradicts “America First” rhetoric.

The Colorado Republican also suggested the veto could be linked to political retaliation, referencing her recent calls for transparency surrounding the release of files connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has repeatedly dismissed those disclosures and pushed back against congressional pressure to release additional records.

The White House defended the veto by pointing to costs, arguing the project would improperly shift financial responsibility from local governments to federal taxpayers. Administration officials said the project was originally designed to be funded locally and criticized what they described as continued reliance on federal subsidies.

Boebert’s criticism comes amid broader Republican unease, as other GOP lawmakers have openly challenged Trump on redistricting, prosecutions tied to the 2020 election, and federal spending priorities. While Republicans still largely align with Trump, the episode highlights growing internal disputes over governance, accountability, and whether political loyalty should outweigh tangible impacts on local communities.
