Boston, Massachusetts — Police fatally shot an individual armed with a sword Saturday after authorities say the person attacked officers and an emergency medical clinician during a response to a reported mental health incident.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said officers were called to a residence on Hemenway Street around midday, where the individual was initially behind a door while responders attempted to assess the situation. During the interaction, the person suddenly emerged and struck an EMS clinician before stabbing a police officer in the arm.
Officers responded by deploying a Taser and then firing their weapons, stopping the attack. The individual was transported to a hospital but later died from their injuries. Authorities have not released the person’s identity.
The injured officer suffered a severe laceration and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Additional officers and the EMS clinician were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials indicated the situation involved a mental health crisis, though further details have not been disclosed. The incident remains under investigation.
