AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Sunday he hopes Rep. Jasmine Crockett enters the 2026 Senate race, arguing she would be “pummeled” in a general election and suggesting her statewide bid would end her political career. Crockett, who joined Congress two years ago, is considering a last-minute run for the seat currently held by Sen. John Cornyn, with a filing deadline looming Monday.

If she enters the race, Crockett would join an already competitive Democratic primary against former Rep. Colin Allred and state Rep. James Talarico. A recent poll shows Crockett leading both, but Abbott argued her “progressive socialist agenda” would alienate Texas voters outside her district.

“Most Texans are very different from her district, her base and her values,” Abbott wrote on X, saying the Republican nominee would “crush” her and that Texas’s political landscape has ended the careers of similar candidates.

Crockett dismissed the criticism, saying she is strategic, not impulsive, and noted that she consistently polls her viability before engaging in statewide races. She pointed to an October survey showing her ahead by six points over Talarico and by 18 over Allred.

If she won the nomination, Crockett could face Cornyn, Attorney General Ken Paxton, or Rep. Wesley Hunt. A RealClearPolitics average shows a tight GOP primary, with Cornyn holding a razor-thin edge over Paxton and a wider lead over Hunt.
