Jury selection began Monday for a trial determining the compensation Rudy Giuliani owes to former Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, whom he defamed with unfounded fraud claims in the 2020 election. Giuliani, found liable for defamation, falsely accused them of handling USB drives like drugs, when they were actually exchanging a ginger mint. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell earlier ruled Giuliani liable for willfully ignoring court orders for evidence submission.

Giuliani’s attorney, Joseph Sibley, attributed a delay in court appearance to security line holdups. Jurors are being questioned on beliefs about Joe Biden’s election legitimacy and QAnon slogans. Freeman and Moss, set to testify, seek damages between $15.5 million and $43 million for emotional distress caused by Giuliani’s actions.

Giuliani, also testifying, missed a pretrial hearing last week, leading to Judge Howell’s criticism of his non-compliance. Giuliani admitted in a court filing that his statements about Freeman and Moss were “false.” The trial follows their emotional testimony to the House Jan. 6 committee about harassment from Giuliani’s baseless fraud claims.

Giuliani faces multiple legal challenges, including criminal charges in Georgia for election interference, lawsuits from Smartmatic and Dominion Voting Systems, and a sexual assault allegation, which he denies. Financially strained, Giuliani has listed his New York City apartment for sale at $6.1 million.
