Michigan’s attorney general, Dana Nessel, a Democrat, has filed forgery and other felony charges against 16 Republican activists who allegedly signed papers falsely claiming to be the duly appointed presidential electors for the state after the 2020 election. These charges mark the first criminal proceedings related to the attempts by allies of former President Donald Trump to designate alternate slates of electors. The alleged scheme aimed to create a contest or crisis during the Electoral College vote tally and certification of Joe Biden’s victory on January 6, 2021.
Some individuals involved in the creation of alternate slates have argued that they were part of a contingency plan to support Trump’s legal efforts in challenging the 2020 election results. However, those legal challenges ultimately failed in court, leading to investigations and potential legal consequences for those who signed the documents and organized the efforts.
Attorney General Dana Nessel stated that the self-styled electors’ plan to reject the voters’ will and undermine democracy was fraudulent and legally baseless.
