The man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has been identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, a Pittsburgh suburb. Crooks opened fire at the rally on Saturday, killing one attendee and critically injuring two others before being killed by the Secret Service.
Authorities discovered explosive devices in Crooks’ car, and the gun used in the attack was registered to his father. As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials surrounded Crooks’ home on Sunday morning.
Investigators have not yet determined a motive. Public records show Crooks was a registered Republican, but he had also donated $15 to a progressive political action committee on President Joe Biden’s inauguration day. No past criminal cases were found against Crooks.
An AR-style rifle was recovered at the scene. Video analysis indicated the shooter was less than 150 meters from where Trump was speaking, a distance within range for a skilled marksman. Federal agents are still investigating how Crooks obtained the weapon.
