A new law called House Bill 3751 was signed by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. This law allows noncitizens who are legally authorized to work in the U.S. and can lawfully carry firearms to become police officers.

Although the law received bipartisan support, some oppose it, believing that noncitizens should not have the power to detain citizens. The previous state statute prohibited noncitizens from acting as deputy sheriffs or special policemen, but this language has been removed with the passing of the new law. Governor Pritzker is proud of this new law.
