Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that the U.S. never seriously intended for Ukraine to join NATO, despite public statements suggesting otherwise. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he vowed that if NATO membership remains unattainable, “we’ll make NATO in Ukraine.”
Zelensky’s remarks come amid shifting U.S. policy under President Trump, whose administration has downplayed Ukraine’s war objectives. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently called Ukraine’s goals “unrealistic” before walking back the statement.
Vice President J.D. Vance, also at the conference, criticized European leaders for their handling of free speech and immigration, warning that ignoring public sentiment could erode support. Addressing Ukraine, Vance gave little indication of the Trump administration’s approach to a negotiated peace.
Trump, who has pushed for an end to the war, spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday but did not contact Zelensky first, drawing criticism from Kyiv. When asked if Ukraine is an “equal member” in peace talks, Trump responded, “It’s an interesting question.”
