WASHINGTON, D.C. — A majority of Americans disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling tariffs, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted just days before the Supreme Court struck down his global tariff policy.
The survey, conducted Feb. 12–17 among 2,589 U.S. adults using Ipsos’ probability-based KnowledgePanel, found broad opposition across income levels, age groups and racial demographics. Overall, more Americans disapprove than approve of Trump’s approach, and opinions have remained largely unchanged since April of last year.
The poll highlights sharp divisions within the Republican Party. While 75% of Republicans overall approve of Trump’s handling of tariffs, that support drops significantly among self-described non-MAGA Republicans. Just 43% of that group approve, while 55% disapprove. By contrast, 87% of MAGA Republicans support Trump’s tariff strategy.
White voters without college degrees are split, while white voters with college degrees disapprove by more than a two-to-one margin. Rural Americans are divided, but suburban and urban voters largely oppose the tariff approach.
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision invalidating key tariffs was released Feb. 20, after the poll concluded.
