The Wall Street Journal editorial board is calling on congressional Republicans to eliminate Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies as part of negotiations to end the ongoing federal government shutdown, now in its fourth week. In a Tuesday editorial, the board argued that the ACA has failed to make health care more affordable or effective, claiming that Democrats are attempting to “extort the GOP into extending enriched ObamaCare subsidies that were sold as temporary pandemic support.”

“Do taxpayers — many of whom pay for their own coverage at work — want to underwrite baby boomer early retirement?” the editorial asked, suggesting public sentiment may be shifting against continued subsidies. The paper further contended that more voters are recognizing “the Affordable Care Act is a debacle that has made care worse and more expensive.”

While critical of President Donald Trump on several issues, the Journal urged Republicans to “re-enter the debate on healthcare” and go “on offense on ObamaCare’s failures.” The editorial framed the current political standoff as a key opportunity for the GOP to redefine its health policy platform after years of internal division.
