Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticized former President Donald Trump’s suggestion of placing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a major public health role if Trump is re-elected. Calling Kennedy “the last person” suitable for such a position, Harris argued that Kennedy’s promotion of “junk science and crazy conspiracy theories” would endanger public health. Kennedy, who has voiced anti-vaccine views, previously expressed support for a national abortion ban and has claimed no vaccine is entirely “safe and effective.”

Kennedy stated that Trump promised him influence over key health agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He has said his focus would be on reducing pesticides and unhealthy ingredients in foods. Critics, however, point to Kennedy’s history of anti-vaccine advocacy and alleged involvement in Samoa’s 2019 measles outbreak, which killed 83 people, as examples of the harm his influence could bring to public health.

Howard Lutnick, co-chair of Trump’s transition team, mentioned that Kennedy aims to gather federal data to challenge vaccine efficacy.
