JEFFERSON CITY, MO — A coalition of progressive organizations in Missouri is using a proposal to eliminate the state income tax as a catalyst to build a broader, long-term alliance across multiple advocacy groups.
The coalition, led by at least 24 organizations, has hosted meetings statewide as labor unions, reproductive rights advocates, LGBTQ+ groups, and faith organizations coordinate messaging and strategy. The effort follows the Missouri House’s approval of a constitutional amendment that would eliminate the income tax and replace revenue through expanded or increased sales taxes.
Organizers say the initiative highlights how policy changes could impact multiple communities, prompting a unified response. “Organizing is how we win,” said Drew Amidei of Missouri Jobs with Justice, emphasizing collaboration across issues. Events have drawn varying turnout, from smaller gatherings in Jefferson City to larger crowds in Kansas City and surrounding areas.
The coalition aims to extend beyond the current legislative fight, focusing on voter outreach, advocacy campaigns, and continued organizing efforts ahead of a potential statewide ballot measure later this year. Missouri’s Republican-controlled legislature and recent policy debates have contributed to heightened political activity among advocacy groups.
