At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured when a vehicle struck a crowd on Canal and Bourbon Streets in New Orleans’ French Quarter during New Year’s celebrations. The incident, described as a “mass casualty event” by officials, occurred early on New Year’s Day.
Witnesses reported a white truck speeding into the crowd before the driver exited and opened fire. Police returned fire, according to CBS News. The injured were transported to five area hospitals.
Bourbon Street, a hub for nightlife, had drawn large crowds for the holiday and visitors arriving for the upcoming College Football Playoff Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame.
