FBI data reveals a significant decrease in homicides across the United States, with a more than 13% drop in 2023, marking a continued decline following a sharp increase during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cities with populations exceeding 1 million experienced a reduction in murders by over 20% and a decline in violent crime by more than 10%, according to the FBI’s Quarterly Uniform Crime Report, which compiles data from numerous police departments.

The report indicates a nationwide decrease in nearly all violent and property crime categories, such as rape, assault, and robbery. The exception was motor vehicle theft, which saw an 11% increase. These findings contrast with public opinion; a Gallup poll in November showed a majority of Americans believe crime is worsening.

The issue of crime has become a point of contention in political discourse, with Republicans criticizing Democrats over crime policies. President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland have highlighted these crime rate reductions, attributing success to the Justice Department’s strategies to combat violent crime, including efforts against gangs, illegal firearms, and bolstering police forces.

This downward trend in crime rates follows a nearly 30% surge in homicides in 2020, the highest in two decades, according to the FBI.
