A new report from The Commonwealth Fund, titled “Mirror, Mirror 2024: A Portrait of the Failing U.S. Health System,” ranked the U.S. healthcare system last among 10 high-income countries, including Australia, Canada, and the U.K. The analysis found the U.S. at the bottom in terms of accessibility and health outcomes, as well as administrative efficiency and equity.
The report highlighted the major barrier of affordability, with roughly 26 million uninsured Americans and high out-of-pocket costs for those with insurance. In contrast, nations like the Netherlands, U.K., and Germany have more affordable and accessible care, with systems that provide coverage for primary care, maternity care, and after-hours medical services.
The U.S. also has the lowest life expectancy, highest rates of preventable deaths, and most excess deaths from COVID-19 among the countries studied. While the report acknowledged that no country’s healthcare system is perfect, it emphasized that all nations can learn from each other’s successes and failures.
