Cassel, representing a Democratic stronghold in Broward County, won reelection unopposed. Her announcement follows Rep. Susan Valdés of Tampa, who left the Democratic Party earlier this month, expressing frustration with the party’s approach.
With these shifts, Republicans grow their supermajority in Florida’s House to 87-33, extending control they’ve held since 1999. Political analyst Susan MacManus noted the moves reflect Democrats’ limited influence in a Republican-dominated state.
