President Trump confirmed plans to build a $200 million ballroom at the White House, drawing criticism from Democrats and ethics watchdogs. Construction, funded by Trump and private donors, will begin in September with the goal of completion by January 2029.
Trump said the project fulfills a 150-year aspiration. “They’ve wanted a ballroom at the White House for more than 150 years… I’m really good,” he told reporters. In addition, Trump is paving the Rose Garden and redecorating the Oval Office.
Democrats denounced the project as frivolous. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said it embodies “everything DOGE was about,” referring to Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Some historians and architects support the addition. The White House Historical Association said new structures like the Truman Balcony once raised concerns but are now seen as essential.
Still, critics questioned the timing amid economic unease. “It’s a visible middle finger to working-class Americans,” said strategist Antjuan Seawright.
The ballroom will be adjacent to the current East Wing, potentially impacting space for First Lady staff and public tours. Trump emphasized its use for state dinners and formal events.
