The Trump administration redirected $300 million in unused tariff revenue to fund the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), preventing a shutdown of the food aid program that serves over 6 million low-income mothers and children. The move came amid a government shutdown that had halted new federal funding.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said officials found “a creative solution” to use tariff funds to keep the program operating. The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the transfer of unspent tariff money from the previous fiscal year. Alaska and Washington received enough funds to continue their WIC programs through late October, while Nevada’s Inter-Tribal Council was able to reopen offices after receiving aid.

Critics, including Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), noted that both Trump’s budget proposal and a House GOP bill would have reduced future WIC funding. “He should disavow his budget request to cut benefits for millions of moms and kids,” Murray said.
