Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump said Republicans should “nationalize” and “take over” voting in at least 15 unspecified locations, again repeating claims that U.S. elections are plagued by widespread fraud, assertions that courts and election officials have consistently rejected. Trump made the remarks during a podcast interview with former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, offering no details on how such a takeover would be implemented or which jurisdictions he was referencing.

During the interview, Trump alleged that immigrants were brought into the country to vote illegally and criticized Republicans for not being more aggressive on election enforcement. He claimed there are states that are “so crooked” in how votes are counted that official results cannot be trusted, including states he says he won but officially lost. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for clarification.

The comments drew immediate pushback from both parties. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said he opposed nationalizing elections, noting that the Constitution leaves election administration to the states. Michigan election officials echoed that position, stating that federal law does not permit Washington to take control of state-run elections.

Trump’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny following a recent FBI search of an election office in Georgia’s Fulton County related to 2020 election records. Courts, state officials, and members of Trump’s former administration have repeatedly rejected his fraud claims. The comments arrive months before November’s midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress.
