President-elect Donald Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire” and negotiations in Ukraine following the fall of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad. In a Truth Social post, Trump declared, “Assad is gone… Russia lost interest in Syria because of Ukraine,” referring to heavy Russian losses in the conflict.

After meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Trump claimed Zelensky was ready to negotiate to end the war, citing hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian casualties. He urged global action, saying, “I know Vladimir [Putin] well. This is his time to act. China can help.”

Trump’s remarks came amid news of Assad fleeing Syria as rebel forces overtook Damascus and a White House statement confirming President Biden is “closely monitoring” developments in Syria. Biden has led efforts to provide Ukraine with military and financial aid, though Trump has pushed for peace talks, which critics argue could lead to Ukraine ceding territory.
