President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is reportedly avoiding FBI background checks for administrative appointees, opting for private companies instead, CNN reports. Trump has criticized the FBI’s slow vetting process, fearing delays in implementing his agenda.

Certain Cabinet roles, such as attorney general, require security clearances, typically involving FBI background checks. National security attorney Dan Meyer noted Trump’s distrust of the FBI has led to unconventional decisions.

Trump nominated controversial figures like former Reps. Matt Gaetz for attorney general and Tulsi Gabbard for National Intelligence director. Gaetz faced a Justice Department investigation over sex trafficking allegations but was not charged. Gabbard has drawn criticism for comments perceived as sympathetic to U.S. adversaries, including meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad and suggesting U.S. actions prompted Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This mirrors Trump’s 2016 transition, when he bypassed protocol and sought security clearances for appointees, some of which were denied over security concerns. Currently, Trump lacks the authority to grant clearances or briefings until his inauguration.
