President Donald Trump announced he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as part of his push for a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
While Ukraine has agreed to Trump’s proposal, Putin has refused to accept it unconditionally. White House envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin for four hours on Thursday, calling the talks “positive” and “solutions-based”.
“We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One late Sunday. He said the talks will cover “land, power plants, and dividing up certain assets.”
U.S. officials will meet separately with Ukrainian and Russian teams this week. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to continue diplomatic efforts.
Trump also appointed General Keith Kellogg as Special Envoy to Ukraine, signaling a shift in U.S. negotiating strategy after Russian reluctance to engage with him directly.
