President-elect Donald Trump announced he will nominate former Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Known for her support of Trump and criticism of the Democratic Party, Gabbard described her new role as an opportunity to protect American “safety, security, and freedom.”

A former vice chair of the Democratic National Committee and 2020 presidential candidate, Gabbard endorsed Trump in 2022, joining his transition team and formally switching to the Republican Party last month. If confirmed, she would be the first person of color in the ODNI role, a position established under George W. Bush. Gabbard, however, has no intelligence experience.

Gabbard’s past actions, including her 2017 meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and her skepticism about the House January 6 Committee, have sparked controversy. Representative Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer, criticized Gabbard’s nomination, calling her “ill-prepared” and claiming her views could threaten national security.

In her response, Gabbard said she looks forward to starting her work, while critics have raised concerns over her past alignment with Russian talking points, including unproven allegations about U.S. involvement in bioweapons labs in Ukraine.
