During an interview with billionaire Elon Musk, presidential candidate Donald Trump joked that they could “meet next time in Venezuela” if he loses the upcoming November election. Trump suggested that Venezuela, in his view, would be a safer place than the U.S. under such circumstances.
Trump alleged that Venezuela is reducing its crime rate by releasing violent criminals and sending them to the U.S. as illegal immigrants, a claim he has made repeatedly without substantiation. He asserted that Venezuelan jails are emptying into the U.S., although experts like Roberto Briceño-León, director of the Venezuelan Observatory of Violence, have denied any evidence of such actions. Briceño-León attributed the drop in Venezuela’s crime rate to a massive migration of citizens fleeing economic hardship, not a government strategy to send criminals abroad.
