President Donald Trump has confirmed that he sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, urging negotiations for a new nuclear agreement to replace the 2015 deal he withdrew from during his first term.
In a Fox Business News interview, set to air Sunday, Trump warned, “I hope you’re going to negotiate because if we have to go in militarily, it’s going to be a terrible thing.” The White House confirmed the outreach, but Iran’s leadership has not acknowledged receiving the letter.
The move comes as Iran accelerates uranium enrichment, with the International Atomic Energy Agency reporting Tehran’s stockpile has surged to 8,294 kilograms (18,286 pounds) of uranium enriched at 60% purity, just below weapons-grade.
Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy has tightened sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and his administration remains committed to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. However, Khamenei has sent mixed signals, previously saying there is “no harm” in talks but later rejecting negotiations as “not intelligent, wise, or honorable.”
