MIAMI, FL — President Donald Trump warned that New Yorkers will begin leaving the city for Florida following the election of Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s next mayor. Speaking at the America Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday, Trump said, “Miami will soon be the refuge for those fleeing communism in New York City.”
The remarks came just one day after Mamdani’s historic victory over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race. “Where do you live? New York City, but I’m trying to leave because I don’t want to live in a communist regime,” Trump said, portraying Mamdani’s leadership as emblematic of the Democratic Party’s “radical” turn.
Trump, who moved from New York to Palm Beach in 2019, also criticized former Mayor Bill de Blasio, calling him “probably the worst mayor in history.” Florida Republicans have long appealed to Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants by warning against what they describe as creeping socialism under Democratic leadership.
The exchange follows a growing verbal feud between Trump and Mamdani. During his victory speech, Mamdani told supporters, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.” Minutes later, Trump responded on Truth Social, posting, “…AND SO IT BEGINS!”
